Country singer Angie K and longtime partner Marissa Boucher are engaged, Us Weekly can exclusively confirm.
Angie, 33, proposed to Marissa, 42, during a romantic getaway in Tulum, Mexico, earlier in February.
“Marissa’s family has Mexican roots, so I wanted to honor those by asking in one of our favorite places, Tulum,” Angie exclusively recalled to Us. “There is a wonderful hotel called the Papaya Playa Project, an eco-friendly hotel with a private beach.”
She added, “It’s such a dreamy place, it really feels like you’re inside the natural beauty of Tulum. Marissa is very hard to surprise, but I don’t think she saw this coming.”
Angie and Marissa, a photographer, have been together for 10 years and had often discussed how “marriage wasn’t really important to either of us” before they both had a change of hearts.
“I honestly didn’t know what she’d say. I took her to dinner down the beach from our hotel, and at sunset, I took her up to a secret rooftop nearby. It was just us on a deck overlooking the water,” Angie said. “I told her how much she means to me [and] I told her what the ring symbolized to me, so much more than just commitment, but a promise to always work to feel joy together and live a life worth living, to seek to understand then be understood, to care first and fix things later [and] to love her as she is and a desire to grow and change together.”
While Angie admittedly “kind of mumbled” through her speech out of pure nerves, it turned into a perfect moment when Marissa said “yes.”
“When I pulled out the ring and she saw it, I knew she was going to say yes,” Angie gushed to Us. “We both cried, it was the best moment of my life. Then she ran and got her bag and pulled out a ring too! It was an unreal moment. Then as if the night couldn’t get better, as we walked back to the restaurant, a violin player started playing some of our favorite songs — all pure chance. It really was the most perfect way to end the night.”
Angie and Marissa initially met on a cruise ship 12 years ago, kickstarting a cross-country friendship. They started dating two years later when Angie moved to California, where Marissa lived, to audition for The Voice in 2015.
After Angie’s tenure on the singing competition, she relocated to San Diego to be closer to Marissa. They later moved to Nashville in 2019, which Angie chronicled in her song “Leave California.”
The rising country phenom is set to release her self-titled EP on Friday, February 7, featuring an array of “personal” tracks.
“These songs are so personal, it means the world that you all give them such a soft place to land,” she wrote via Instagram last month.
