Why Selena Gomez Skipped the 2025 Critics Choice Awards

Selena Gomez took another break during awards season. The actress chose not to attend tonight’s Critics Choice Awards. The red carpet came and went without a sighting of the star, who is nominated for Best Song for Emilia Pérez’s “Mi Camino.” Emilia Pérez has a Best Picture nod as well.

Gomez’s co-star Zoe Saldaña attended, however.

Since the Golden Globes, Gomez has been focused primarily on Rare Beauty in addition to her awards season campaign. She had an event with Jennifer Aniston earlier this week.

She and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, have also teased she is working on new music.

Gomez has not spoken about the controversy surrounding her co-star Karla Sofía Gascón’s past tweets. Gomez’s other co-star Saldaña did briefly address the scandal during a London Q&A on January 31.

“It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group,” Saldaña said. “I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural and gender equity. And it just saddens me.”

Gomez also had a positive experience working on the film. She spoke to ELLE for our December issue about how it could serve as a “great example to other creatives of how to be able to allow us to enrich each of these characters.”

Emilia Pérez’s director Jacques Audiard “let us do that with such freedom,” she said. “It felt like you could see it on screen. Every one of us would love to just, again, give people hope. But yes, there’s much more to do.”
